Events & Places

Aldbury and the surrounding area

A quintessential English village within easy reach of the capital

The Greyhound Inn offers the perfect location for a weekend break or a relaxing Sunday lunch. Overlooking the delightful duck pond and ancient stocks, you’ll find a stay at this historic former coaching inn will help you unwind the moment you cross the threshold.

Aldbury is well known as one of the most picturesque villages in Hertfordshire, it is a delight to wander the village streets and the location is frequently used by film crews as the quintessential English village.

It is well worth spending a few hours exploring the village of Aldbury. Apart from the obvious duck pond and stocks, there is a mediaeval Church which dates back to the thirteenth century. In Summer months you may chance upon the Aldbury Morris Men www.aldburymorris.co.uk.

Recently, Renée Zellweger was in the village filming a hunting scene for the second film in the Bridget Jones series, (although sadly the scene ended up on the cutting room floor – although you can see it on the DVD!)

The densely wooded grounds of the Ashridge Estate are owned by the National Trust and there are many paths and bridleways which you can discover.

The Ridgeway
An 85 mile walk following a route along the ridges of the Chilterns and Berkshire Downs used by prehistoric man. The route starts at nearby Ivinghoe Beacon – one of the highest points of the Chiltern Hills.

The Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum
Your chance to come face-to-face with a full-sized gorilla!

Whipsnade Wild Animal Park
Get up close to some of the biggest, rarest and most majestic animals alive – including elephants, tigers, lions, rhinos and giraffes.

London School of Gliding
With free reciprocal membership, loads of gliders, tugs and winch cables – a visit to the Dunstable Downs is always a good idea!

National Nature Reserve – Tring Reservoirs
Originally built to supply water to the Grand Union Canal network, the network of reservoirs near Wilstone and Marsworth have proved to be a haven a wide variety of birdlife.

Grand Union Canal
